As an experienced community educator that spent eight beautiful years creatively operating a highly-successful academic program that serviced over 100 kids per day, I noticed two things. First, I observed that most of the kids that arrived each day for academic help often came four, if not five, days a week. I admired their commitment to academics, understanding that most students spent nearly 20 hours a week under my care and guidance. Secondly, it became apparent that although many of the youth were academically stout, most of the students valued the essence of the space where we worked each day, finding comfort in its stability and familiarity. I frequently asked the students why they chose to attend the academic center, and their answer was simple:
It feels like home.
I am sure that they appreciated the academic help they received each day and the chocolate chip cookies that I baked each week. Still, those two details weren't valued as much as finding an unexpected "home" within an academic center. Within the walls of this "home," students could gather, laugh, connect, learn, teach, lead, cry, smile, and create. These students understood that home truly is where the heart is.
