For eight incredible years, I had the privilege of leading a highly successful academic program that served over 100 students daily. During that time, I noticed two profound truths. First, many students showed up not just once or twice a week but nearly every day—four or even five days a week. Their commitment to learning was inspiring, and I quickly realized that, for nearly 20 hours a week, I wasn’t just an educator—I was a steady presence in their lives.
Second, beyond academics, what truly resonated with these students was something deeper: a sense of home. When I asked why they kept coming back, their response was simple:
"It feels like home."
Yes, they valued the academic support and maybe even the homemade chocolate chip cookies I baked weekly. But what mattered most was the warmth, stability, and belonging they found in that space. It became more than just a place to study—it was where they gathered, laughed, connected, learned, led, taught, and grew. It was a space where they felt safe to cry, smile, and create.
